Colga through to last 8 of SFAI Cup

After Shootout drama

Colga 2-1 Shamrock Bhoys.

Shamrock Bhoys, the league leaders from Bray, Co. Wicklow, set their intent early by scoring directly from a corner kick in the first attack of the match. This immediately put the home team under lots of pressure in front of a large crowd.

Both team traded opportunities during the first have with Ely Sheedy coming closest for Colga after fine midfield work from Tomo Culhane and Christy Brennan. Shamrock Bhoys came close to increasing their lead in the 1st half only to be denied by some brilliant goalkeeping from Robert Timmons.

The second half saw more Colga pressure on the Bhoys. With 20mins remaining, Sean McDonagh replaced Michael Corless, who had worked tirelessly throughout the match. 5 minutes later the Colga pressure finally paid off when Sean McDonagh slipped the ball past the Shamrock goalkeeper. A tense 10 minutes remained when the Colga defense of Liam Corcoran, David Lee, Liam McDonagh, and Conal Harkin remained resolute. Then, a dramatic ending. 3 minutes into injury time and Colga were awarded a corner. Shamrock Bhoys defense cleared the first cross only for the ball to land at the feet of Christy Brennan. Brennan took one touch and superbly shot the ball into the top corner of the Bhoys net.

Moments later, the final whistle went, and the local crowd celebrated a memorable home victory against a super Shamrock Bhoys team.

Next up, a home quarter final vs St. Joseph’s Boys from Dublin.
